The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, an all-female African-American unit of the U.S. Army during World War II, was pivotal in solving the crisis of undelivered mail to U.S. soldiers in Europe. Established in 1945, the 6888th, also known as the Six Triple Eight, was the only all-female, African-American battalion overseas, tasked with sorting and distributing a massive backlog of mail. Led by Major Charity Adams, these women successfully managed over 17 million pieces of mail, ensuring morale-boosting communication between soldiers and their loved ones, and set a standard for efficiency and dedication in a segregated military.
